Webinar: Recognizoing Trauma in Adolescent Newcomers

New Blog Post on UACs

In a new blog post on our Learning Network website, we update you on some of the ways that unaccompanied children (UACs) are implicated in the Trump administration's recent executive orders and implementation memos.

These actions direct immigration officials to reconsider the definition of 'unaccompanied' in a way that might leave far fewer children with the protections of UAC status. They also threaten parents who use smugglers to bring their children to the United States and end the policy of releasing some migrants while they wait for deportation hearings.

Read more online. We will continue to update you as we find out more about the likely impacts of executive decisions on immigrant youth.

Recognizing and Addressing Trauma in Adolescent Newcomers
Friday, March 3, 2017, 11:30am ET/8:30am PT (one-hour webinar)

In this webinar, two practitioners from mental health clinics—one community-based and one based in a school district—describe how they have been working to help immigrant students and families coping with trauma. Many young immigrants in our secondary schools have a history of trauma from their lives in their home countries or from their journey to the United States, and many more have been experiencing fear and anxiety since the election. The speakers will discuss recognizing trauma in newcomers, vicarious trauma in adults who work with newcomer students, and some models for working with youth and staff to address these pressing mental health needs.

Presenters:

  • Cristina Muñiz de la Peña, Ph.D., Mental Health Director, Terra Firma Healthcare and Justice for Immigrant Children (New York City)
  • Kim Griffin Esperon, LCSW, School Mental Health Field Coordinator, Los Angeles Unified School District

We are also inviting practitioners who work with newcomers around physical and mental health to join the Learning Network and register for our first health-themed webinar. Please feel free to forward this e-mail to relevant colleagues who work with your district.
